Infrastructure News Roundup: January 2025

January isn’t usually a big month for announcements related to enterprise infrastructure, but then this isn’t a normal January. Let’s look at what happened.

THE AI ARMS RACE: POWER, SECURITY, AND INFRASTRUCTURE

OpenAI’s $50B Data Center Push: OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle are teaming up on a massive $50 billion data center project to create the infrastructure needed for the next wave of AI. With Oracle’s cloud expertise and SoftBank’s investment muscle, this project could redefine the AI compute landscape. Or it could just be another big CapEx boondoggle (in which both Oracle and Nvidia will be the big winners). Time will tell.

Cisco’s AI Defense Solution: AI is under attack—literally. Cisco launched AI Defense, its security-first framework designed to protect enterprises deploying AI-powered applications. With growing concerns over AI-driven cyber threats, Cisco is taking a proactive approach to safeguard the next-gen workforce. This is a nice release by Cisco, who’s pushing further into cyber-protection.

Dynatrace Boosts AI Observability: The observability giant is expanding its AI-driven insights to support generative AI initiatives. By enhancing real-time monitoring, Dynatrace makes AI-driven cloud operations smarter and more efficient. We’re at Dynatrace Perform this week in Las Vegas, so expect more in-depth analysis of this one soon.

NVIDIA Announces “Quantum Day” at GTC 2025: NVIDIA, whose CEO Jensen Huang recently said that practical quantum computing is “decades away”, is nonetheless pushing the technology, announcing a special Quantum Day event featuring top computing leaders at its annual GTC conference. Expect big discussions on how quantum will supercharge AI workloads.

CYBERSECURITY & DATA PROTECTION: THE NEXT FRONTIER

Commvault & CrowdStrike Join Forces: Cyber resilience just got a power boost. Commvault is integrating CrowdStrike’s Falcon XDR into its Commvault Cloud, merging backup and recovery with cutting-edge threat detection. We like this one and believe that it could bring real value to enterprise security. This could be a game-changer for enterprise security.

Observo Slashes Noisy Telemetry by 70%: Observo is helping enterprise security teams cut down on unnecessary alerts and data noise, making threat detection more precise. Less noise, more action—security teams might just thank them.

Komprise Steps Up Data Protection with AI-Powered Sensitive Data Management: Handling sensitive data in the AI era is getting trickier. Komprise’s new AI-powered capabilities help enterprises track, manage, and protect sensitive information, ensuring compliance and security in a data-driven world. We really like this feature, part of a trend of moving data-aware capabilities into the data plane. Read our in-depth take on it HERE.

CLOUD & STORAGE: WHO’S WINNING THE DATA WARS?

Cloudian & Hammerspace, Storage’s New Power Couple: Cloudian has officially integrated its HyperStore object storage with Hammerspace’s Global Data Platform to provide seamless data mobility and orchestration across hybrid environments. We didn’t write about it, but it’s a big win for enterprises drowning in unstructured data.

Quantum Myriad Update Brings Bigger, Faster SSDs: Quantum upgraded its Myriad all-flash file system, adding support for massive 122.88 TB Solidigm SSDs and scaling enhancements. That’s a lot of storage firepower for AI/ML and high-performance computing workloads.

BMC Software Boosts Mainframe AI & Storage: Mainframes aren’t dead—they’re evolving. BMC Software has introduced AI-powered programming support and cloud data sets for mainframes, giving legacy systems a modern makeover.

EDGE, RETAIL & CONNECTIVITY: THE FUTURE OF NETWORKS

HPE Aruba Rolls Out Retail-Focused Networking Tools: Retailers are getting a connectivity boost with HPE Aruba Networking’s latest edge solutions, promising smoother operations, enhanced security, and better customer experiences. The edge is where the action is.

The Bottom Line

AI infrastructure is getting bigger, security is getting smarter, and the cloud storage wars are heating up. Stay tuned—this year is shaping up to be a defining one for tech innovation.
