IT Infrastructure Round-Up: Emerging Trends in Infrastructure and Connectivity (Nov 2024)

November was a busy month of announcements in infrastructure and connectivity, revealing a convergence of innovation to meet the stringent demands of AI-driven workloads, scalability, and cost efficiency.

There are several key trends and commonalities across the announcements:

  • Accelerating AI and Data Workloads: AI is a recurring theme across the announcements, with companies focusing on infrastructure designed to optimize AI/ML workloads. Examples include NVIDIA’s AI reference architectures, Red Hat’s OpenShift enhancements for AI, and Nutanix’s cloud-native AI platform.
  • Multi-Cloud and Cross-Platform Integration: The integration between major cloud providers, such as Oracle and Microsoft Azure, emphasizes the growing importance of multi-cloud strategies. Businesses are increasingly demanding seamless interoperability across platforms, allowing them to leverage best-in-class services from multiple providers. NetApp’s flash arrays and Dell’s Azure AI storage support further reinforce this trend by simplifying data across hybrid cloud operations.
  • Cost-Effective High-Performance Storage: The shift toward flash-based storage solutions—such as Hitachi’s QLC arrays, NetApp’s AFF and C-Series, and Scality’s ARTESCA appliance—answers the need for cost-efficient, high-performance storage.
  • Open RAN Delivers on its Promise of Simplicity & Interoperability: Connectivity is advancing rapidly, with companies like Enfabrica introducing GPU networking chips and Verizon leveraging Open RAN to improve interoperability. Qualcomm’s entry into the 5G RAN market and the rise of Open RAN solutions signal a shift toward modular, software-driven network architectures that enhance flexibility and cost control.
