At Google Cloud Next 2025, Rubrik announced the expansion of Rubrik Annapurna, its API-driven AI data security and governance platform, to Google Cloud. The announcement sees Rubrik delivering Annapurna as a secure data access layer for AI-driven application development within Google’s Agentspace framework.
This follows the initial launch of Annapurna at AWS re:Invent 2024, where Rubrik similarly integrated with Amazon Bedrock to accelerate AI adoption on AWS.
Rubrik Annapurna provides enterprises secure, policy-driven access to structured and unstructured data across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. By integrating with Agentspace, Rubrik enables enterprises building AI models on Google Cloud to manage security, governance, compliance, and risk controls at scale.
Annapurna on Google CLoud
Rubrik is extending Annapurna’s architecture with several core functions aligned to AI data workflows. These capabilities enforce Zero Trust principles, support compliance, and improve security posture during AI model development and deployment:
- API-Driven Secure Data Access: Through controlled APIs, Rubrik exposes stored data across Rubrik-managed environments (including cloud, on-premises, and SaaS). With granular access policies, AI models leveraging Google Agentspace can securely query enterprise data for both training and inference.
- Zero Trust Authorization & Policy Governance: Rubrik Annapurna enforces access controls using Zero Trust security models. Enterprises define role-based and policy-based controls, limiting data access to specific models, users, or services within Agentspace. Policies can restrict data queries based on sensitivity, classification, or regulatory requirements.
- Anomaly Detection and Access Monitoring: Rubrik integrates anomaly detection within AI data pipelines. It monitors for unusual access patterns, data exfiltration attempts, or unauthorized use of sensitive data during AI model operation. The system alerts security teams and can trigger automated remediation workflows.
- Automated Compliance Enforcement: Rubrik automates compliance validation during AI development workflows. It scans for sensitive data types, including personally identifiable information (PII) and regulated content, and enforces masking, tokenization, or data minimization where applicable.
- Seamless AI Data Pipelines for Multi-Cloud Architectures: Annapurna enables enterprises to build AI data pipelines that span multiple environments. AI workloads running in Google Cloud can access data in hybrid environments (on-premises or other clouds) without compromising governance or control.
Integration with Google AgentSpace
Agentspace is Google Cloud’s AI orchestration platform that enables developers to build and operate AI agents capable of querying enterprise data for real-time insights.
Rubrik Annapurna acting as a native data source within Agentspace allows:
- Secure data retrieval by AI models using Rubrik’s APIs.
- Enforcement of Zero Trust data access policies at query time.
- Real-time anomaly detection during model operation.
- Compliance enforcement on data ingestion and usage.
Rubrik Annapurna complements existing Google Cloud security services (such as VPC Service Controls, IAM, and Confidential Computing) by providing a unified governance layer for AI data access across distributed environments.
Analysis
Rubrik’s expansion of Annapurna to Google Cloud is a natural move beyond backup and recovery into securing enterprise data for AI-driven applications. As organizations look to scale generative AI projects, secure access to sensitive data has become one of the biggest challenges.
By integrating with Google Agentspace, Rubrik positions Annapurna as a control plane for AI data governance, providing enterprises with secure, policy-driven access to structured and unstructured data for AI training and retrieval. This addresses growing (and voild) concerns around data privacy, compliance, and risk in AI development.
This also builds on Rubrik’s earlier integration of Annapurna with AWS Bedrock, which saw the company deliver consistent data security controls across multiple cloud platforms. This strategy differentiates Rubrik from traditional competitors like Cohesity, Commvault, and Veeam, which remain focused primarily on backup, recovery, and ransomware defense.
In the near term, Rubrik’s early investment in AI data security gives it an advantage in helping enterprises move AI projects from pilot to production. Success with AI will depend not only on model development but also on securing and governing the data that powers those models—with Annapurna, Rubrik demonstrates a clear understanding of that need.
